New presenters and location for Robot Wars announced
Dara O Briain has been announced as the new presenter of Robot Wars, which returns to our screens after a 12 year hiatus later in 2016.
The Irish comedian, best known for hosting BBC Two's Mock the Week, will take over the reigns from Red Dwarf's Craig Charles when the new series of Robot Wars starts filming in March.
O Briain will be joined by fellow Irish TV presenter Angela Scanlon who will be taking on the role of pit reporter, a job previously filled by the likes of Philippa Forrester, Julia Reed and Jayne Middlemiss.
Many fans of Robot Wars had hoped to see the return of Charles, who when the new series was announced said on Twitter "I've heard the news but as yet have had no contact with anyone involved in the new production of robot wars #lovetodoit".
However it is not all bad news for fans of the original series, as it has also been confirmed that long-time Robot Wars commentator Jonathan Pearce will be returning to the show. Pearce had previously indicated he would be interested in taking up his old post once more for the new series.
Robot Wars arena location
Along with the news of the presenter lineup, the location of the new set and famous Robot Wars arena has been revealed. The series will be filmed in Renfrew, Scotland, not far from Glasgow in a warehouse the size of two football pitches on the Westway Park industrial estate.
Fans can apply for a chance to see the battles first hand in the studio audience by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org or by calling 0208 5308 100. Filming of the series is scheduled for two weekends in March 2016, the 4th-6th and the 11th-13th.
Coaches from the centre of Glasgow are being arranged to transport audience members to and from the new venue when filming starts in March. It is unknown whether they will be provided by Megabus.
Robot Wars has previously been filmed in London's Docklands, Earls Court and a huge aircraft hanger at the former RAF Newton airbase in Nottinghamshire.
